It is well known that there are three great monotheistic religions – Christianity, Islam and Judaism. One stream of thought wants to unify these conceptions as different expressions of the same underlying view of God. However, the Christian view of God as a Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit causes great offence to both Islam and Judaism. It is one of the most distinctive expressions of the centrality in Christianity of the importance of relationship between the one and the many, and offers a distinctive solution to the problem of particulars and universals (that most basic of philosophical problems) – God is One but Three Persons.
