I recently did a video talk in which I referenced “Daniel’s 70th Week” (actually misreferencing it by calling it Daniel’s 50th week!!). I also discussed eschatological views and the Dispensationalist aberration of Premillennialism in the 19th century. I offer these four talks given by the late Roger Price (d. 1987) of Chichester Christian Fellowship, which provides the context of the Book of Daniel and an excellent defence of its authenticity. It also contains what I consider the best explanation and defence of the Dispensationalist interpretation of the the “70th week” hypothesis. The detailed and systematic presentation he gives here is valuable for anyone wanting to understand the issues around this subject and the Book of Daniel, regardless of whether you concur with Dispensationalism more generally.
The Book of Daniel in the Hebrew scriptures is one of the most controversial books of the canon. Its prophetic, apocalyptic genre and its historical accuracy led many higher critics in the 19th century to deny that it was written when it was claimed to have been written. There were arguments over its languages, it contains Hebrew and Aramaic, and even some Greek words. Critics alleged its historical accuracy and these linguistic factors meant it must have been written after the fact. However, the explosion of archaeological research and advances in linguistic research during the 20th century, progressively undermined the Higher Critical case against Daniel. Other non-prophetic books which had been criticised in a similar way by the Higher critics were readily accepted as authentic in the wake of the modern research. However, owing to the prophetic nature of Daniel, critics refused to admit its authenticity despite the strong external evidence. However, a compelling case for its historicity and authorship can now be made, Daniel was found to contain intricate historical details that had passed out of knowledge, only being rediscovered in the light of new scholarship.
