Does religion hinder or enable psychological health?

This was an undergraduate essay for a Psychology of Religion module.  I “wandered off the script” in writing this essay which was primarily supposed to be contrasting Freud’s and Jung’s views of the role of religion – Freud was well known for his disdain of it and Jung for his valuing of it.  However, I asserted that Freud, an atheist, Jewish intellectual of his time, was actually borrowing from Marxism, Jung was creative but theologically heterodox and that scientific psychological analysis (totally uncovered in the course) was important to consider when answering this question.  As a consequence, it did not get a stellar mark but still a respectable one but I find it an interesting and adventurous essay.
